The Dinosaur Game was created in 2014 by a team of Google Chrome developers — Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes, and Edward Jung — who wanted to make the “No Internet” error screen a little more fun. Instead of just showing the message “No Internet,” they thought, why not let users do something while waiting for the connection to return?

The result was a small endless runner game featuring a pixelated T-Rex that jumps over cacti in a desert. The developers nicknamed it “Project Bolan,” after Marc Bolan, the lead singer of the 1970s rock band T. Rex — a fitting tribute.

Their goal was simple: to create a game that looked like something from the prehistoric days of the web — minimal, black-and-white, and nostalgic. And they succeeded. The game quickly became a favorite among users, even when their internet worked just fine.
