Diablo 4's Horadric Cube has turned late-game item work into a real gamble. Its Transfigure Item recipe can add a powerful random effect to an eligible Legendary, Unique, or Mythic Unique, but it also needs Volatile Primordial Dust and may close the item's crafting options for good. If you're sorting through valuable D4 items, learn the risk before spending materials. A lucky item can take several transfigurations, yet most pieces will stop after the first attempt.

Know What the First Roll Can Do

A transfigured item may receive Indestructible or Unmodifiable. Indestructible is harmless. The gear simply keeps its durability after death and can still receive further work. Unmodifiable is the result players need to fear. Once it appears, you cannot Temper, Enchant, Masterwork, or transfigure that item again. Socketed gems and runes may still be changed, but the main crafting path is closed. The odds of staying modifiable sit around four or five percent, depending on the item type. That is why two successful rolls in a row are rare enough to plan around.

Finish the Good Item Before Rolling Again

Suppose the first attempt gives you a great effect and leaves the item open. Do not rush back to the Cube. That shiny result is only the beginning. Add sockets at the Jeweler, Temper the desired recipes, and use the Occultist to settle the core stats. Imprint the right Legendary Aspect, then Masterwork the affixes your build actually uses. It may feel strange to pause while luck is on your side, but this order protects your investment. If the next transfiguration closes the item, at least it will be fully prepared.

Use Spare Bases as Test Pieces

With several copies of the same item, take a cheaper route. Try the first transfiguration on an untouched spare before paying for expensive upgrades. Most attempts will become Unmodifiable, so there is no reason to spend gold and rare materials beforehand. Keep the few pieces that gain a useful effect and remain open. Then work on those survivors. A simple routine helps.

Use the first transfiguration on an unupgraded spare.

Discard or salvage pieces that close immediately.

Fully craft the survivors before another attempt.

Special Rules for Amulets and Prisms

Amulets deserve extra care because a Kullean Tuning Prism adds a bonus utility Aspect while keeping the item modifiable. Roll that prism effect first, using more prisms if the result misses the mark. After that, finish Tempering, Enchanting, and Masterworking. Only then try a normal transfiguration. The Entropic Tuning Prism follows the opposite logic: it produces a safer strong effect but always makes the item Unmodifiable. Avoid it when you want multiple rolls. You can also Enchant one important affix and keep its original value, which helps protect it alongside Tempered and Greater Affixes. A careful supply of cheap Diablo 4 materials makes this slower approach much easier to maintain.
